Dear Not Ready for Prime Time author,
YOU ARE AWESOME. Just so you know. Awesome. <3
Please feel free to ignore this entire letter aside from my triggers and squicks. If you have a fic in mind for one of my characters that doesn't fit my prompts, go for it! I only offer them if you're like me and need some inspiration. And it is a really long letter, so hey, I don't blame you.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS:
Likes:
Most of what I read and write is gen, so even if I list a lot of shippy stuff for a fandom, please don't think you have to write shippy fic for me. I love plot and character and worldbuilding. On the other hand, with some of these fandoms I also adore the potential and actual ships. I will read het, slash, femmeslash, ships where one or more participants is agender/genderqueer, and any polyamorous ships you come up with. I am not picky about that. I also tend to prefer reading about relationships that are egalitarian, at least outside the bedroom.
As for plot... I'm immensely fond of stories where underestimated characters turn out to be useful or kickass or show an underappreciated facet of themselves. I like science and magic and worldbuilding and How Things Work a lot, but I can write those things for myself, so don't be intimidated if you're in this to write about the characters. I like them or I wouldn't have asked for fic about them.
I also tend to love humor, especially witty dialogue, and adventure stories, particularly ones that sound cracky when summarized but make perfect sense in context. I also really, really love trickster characters.
Please don't feel you need to work every character I picked into your fic! Most of the prompts I am giving are for individual character fics. Also, I pretty much like the other characters in these canons, and had a hard time picking specific characters to ask for.
Dislikes:
First off, please please please don't write explicit/intense child abuse, as this can be one of my triggers. I would also prefer not to receive a Happy Warm Family Gathering story about how Family is all-important. For me, it isn't. I know I've requested some sibling relationships, and those are fine; it's just when it goes from "my wonderful sibling X always has my back" to "FAMILY IS THE IMPORTANTEST," I get annoyed. (If you really want to write warm and fluffy but don't want to write any of the siblings or pairings I've prompted for, I always love friendship fic.)
I am generally squicked by graphic rape/noncon/dubcon, and also by underage sex. I'm also squicked by incest in all of the fandoms I've requested, so please don't write me incest.
Finally, I don't like porn without plot. I'm not offended by porn itself, but I usually skim sex scenes.
REQUESTED FANDOMS:
Avatar: Legend of Korra
Lin Bei Fong
Korra
Asami Sato
Hiroshi Sato
Lin: I would love fic about Lin's backstory or her being badass, especially if it involves copious metalbending. How did she get those scars, for example? Or tell me about the situation in Republic City before Korra showed up, from her perspective?
Korra: I'd really like to see fic about Korra growing up in the Southern Water Tribe, sheltered from the wider world but aware of her Avatar nature. I'd also love to see future fic about her exploring the spirit world. I also really like pro-bending, so if you wanted to write a future match, or maybe little!Korra listening to a pro bending match on the radio.
Asami: I really fell in love with Asami during the series. I'd love to see how she grew up, and I'd also love to explore her reconciling her father's betrayal with the man she knew. Post-series fic about her taking care of the mess her dad left the company in and recovering from all the emotional stuff she went through would also be great.
Hiroshi Sato: So I have a terrible weakness for mad scientists. Tell me about his designs for the first Satomobile. Tell me about Asami's mother and how he met her and what they were both like before she died. Or tell me about Future Industries' rivalry with CabbageCorp -- is there a history of industrial espionage between the two companies? Did he used to work for CabbageCorp? Or is CabbageCorp's CEO just in the wrong place at the wrong time?
I love a lot of things about this show. I love the world -- the cars are gorgeous, the politics are fun, PRO BENDING IS SO COOL, I love that we've got an entirely different Avatar from Aang who is still at heart the Avatar.
As for shipping: I don't really want to get into shipping in this fandom. Bolin is my favorite of the two brothers, but I don't really see Bolin/Korra after their brief attempt to make it work, and I'd like to see him move on. As for Mako, while I like him, I think he needs to stop pretending to be Batman, and I'm not especially into Mako/Asami or Mako/Korra, the two canon ships we've seen for him. I don't hate thos ships either, I just feel like... eh... Asami and Korra could both do better. I do ask you respect the established canon ships within reason, though. I have to admit, I am SUPER curious about Lin/Tenzin, so if you wanted to set a Lin fic during that time, go for it.
Chronicles of Narnia
Jadis
Edmund
Lucy
Eustace
Jadis: Jadis always terrified me as a kid, in the best way possible. Write me a fic about how she learned the Deplorable Word, or tell me about a feast she held in the first few years of the Endless Winter. Tell me how she won her Narnian allies over, and how sometimes dealing with them gives her headaches because ugh, minions. (I realize she is supposed to be Purest Evil, but if you wanted to humanize her a little bit while preserving her evilness, that could be interesting.)
Edmund: Edmund is my favorite of the Pevensie siblings, because I cannot resist a redemption arc. Show me the aftermath of being brainwashed, or how being a schoolboy differs vastly from being a medieval fantasy king. I'd also like sibling fic of him and Lucy; I love that their relationship changes from him sort of lording it over her as not-the-youngest to her instantly believing her in Prince Caspian.
Lucy: Lucy is my second-favorite of the Pevensie siblings, because I probably overidentified with her as a kid. I love that her natural reaction to finding herself in a fantasy world is to just go with it and explore. Tell me about an adventure she had as queen! Tell me about a mistake she made -- I like her, but I don't think she's ever actually wrong in the books. Or write me Edmund-and-Lucy fic?
Eustace: Again, I cannot resist a redemption arc, so Eustace is one of my favorites. Tell me about how he started to doubt his denial of Narnian reality, or tell me about how people reacted to his changed nature when he came back from Narnia. Tell me about something he was right about, even when he was a jerk, because even a stopped watch is right twice a day. Tell me about how Jill Pole came to trust him.
This is a childhood nostalgia fandom for me; I remember my mom reading these to me aloud when I was little, and watching the BBC adaptations when I was home sick. What I like about Narnia is the sense of wonder and magic, and when I got older, I also really appreciated that Narnia was this whole world of beauty and being able to make a difference for these kids who were (largely) stuck in the middle of a war they could do nothing about. (It's probably pretty obvious here that my favorite two books are The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and Voyage of the Dawn-Treader.) I also confess that I really like the Wood Between the Worlds and the idea of many worlds with similar rules and very different outcomes.
If you want to disregard The Last Battle, go right ahead, because that shit is depressing. For context, I have fit into a number of religious categories in my life, but none of them has been anything like Christian, so alternately, if you want to deal with problematic aspects of The Last Battle, you can do that too, but I'd like some Narnian beauty and wonder in there too.
Doctor Who (1963)
The Rani
Romana II
Leela
Jo Grant
I very nearly prompted for "Any" on this, so if you have the awesomest plotbunny ever for, IDK, Steven Taylor, please go ahead and write it for me. Eras I am especially fond of are Two, Three, Five, and Seven, and having everyone meet everyone else is also awesome. (Crossovers with New Who are also okay, although I'd rather you kept the focus on the Old Who characters.)
The Rani: I love how the Rani blithely ignores any semblance of scientific ethics as she goes about her business terrorizing the universe doing Science. Tell me what exactly is up with her obsession with dinosaurs, because she always seems to have them just... around. Do she and the Silurians have a history, maybe? Tell me about her greatest failure, or her greatest triumph.
Romana II: Feel free to write Romana I, or future Romanas, by the way, I have much love for Romana, and I love how she is on wonderfully equal footing with the Doctor. (I ship Romana II/Four, incidentally.) I'd also love to see Romana's adventures in E-Space, or Romana teaming up with one or more of the Doctor's other companions.
Leela: Leela is so badass. Tell me about her life on Gallifrey with Andred -- hopefully he likes that she's more badass than him -- or tell me about life before the Doctor, among the Sevateem -- how exactly does one learn to tell how someone died by their last screams?
Jo Grant: I feel like people categorize Jo Grant as a screamy useless companion, but let's face it, she had some big shoes to fill after Dr. Liz Shaw left. Considering that, and the fact that she went into the job basically without any knowledge of what it entailed? She was a pretty good companion. I want to know what on earth made her decide to learn Escapology -- what kind of career was she going for, and how did that work out for her? Or tell me how it felt to be hypnotized and brainwashed by an evil alien your very first day on the job, and what kind of person gets up and goes back to work the next day after that.
I really like all of the nommed characters in this fandom (including the Doctor! I do like the Doctor lots! Every one of him!), but these were the four I felt I could give good prompts for. Here's a non-character-specific prompt, in case none of the above are really speaking to you: a bunch of former companions starts a private detective agency specializing in alien menaces. When is it set? Who is in it, and how did they all get there? Will Leela and Ace get along, or murder each other? How will Sarah Jane Smith resist the urge to inform the public during sensitive but planet-threatening operations? Is Harry Sullivan fated to remain an imbecile forever, or will Tegan and Nyssa straighten him out? (You need not use any of these characters, of course.)
I watched through all of Classic Who after mainlining New Who, and discovered I like it as much and maybe even better than a lot of the new stuff, so I am a new fan and unfortunately one who isn't terribly familiar with the rest of the 'verse, but give me some time. My favorite Doctor is the Second Doctor, but I love them all, so please don't assume you have to write me Second Doctor fic, especially since two of my prompted characters are Four-era. I love the historical episodes, and the hokey aliens, and UNIT politics, and the fact that they got away with writing an entire multi-part serial about a green magma zombie werewolf apocalypse IN AN EVIL MIRROR UNIVERSE and failed entirely to explain why the green magma turned people into zombie werewolves. (And Inferno is still one of my favorite episodes. GREEN MAGMA ZOMBIE WEREWOLVES, OKAY? Feel free to set something in that universe if for some reason it speaks to you, although I don't expect it to.) One of the things I especially like about Classic Who is the slower pacing that gives us time to get to know the characters and all the little factions fighting over any given planet/base under siege/quarry.
Ships and weird headcanon: feel free to use this or not, but here goes: I ship Doctor/Master like burning. In my head most of the Master's plots are a cry for attention, not that he wouldn't like to take over the universe, but given the universe or the Doctor, he'd probably prefer to take over the Doctor and work on universal domination later. (I also think the Master is subby as hell, despite his chosen name and profession.) I also see the Master and the War Chief as different characters, and I think the War Chief's thing for the Doctor is a lot more unrequited.
Other ships, in chronological order: Barbara/Ian, Steven/Donna (Noble, yes, I know, come on, it'd totally work), Ben/Polly, everyone/Jamie, everyone/Third Doctor, Liz Shaw/Brigadier (insert Three anywhere into that pairing, um, look, it's perfectly normal to have the hots for the Third Doctor, really it is), Romana I/Princess Astra (she did steal her body), Romana II/Fourth Doctor, and Tegan/Turlough (snarky hatesex? please?). I friend-ship Nyssa and Adric, and Nyssa and Tegan, although Adric and Tegan did not really get along at all. If you want to write these characters but don't ship what I do, don't worry about shoehorning it in.
Again, I have a lot of information down for this fandom -- that's just because there is a lot of canon for this fandom, not because I want it any more than the others.
My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic
Rainbow Dash
Pinkie Pie
Princess Cadance
Shining Armor
Rainbow Dash: One of the reasons I love Rainbow Dash is that she's... kind of a thoughtless jerk sometimes. I don't need for the fic to teach her a lesson, or reform her of that, I just kind of enjoy it as a true to life character flaw. Write me a Rainbow Dash adventure story! Maybe a story where adventure kind of turns into drudgery and dealing with Life and overcoming obstacles that aren't especially adventurey? Or give me friendship fic about her and any of the other Mane Six. (I especially like her longtime friendship with Fluttershy.) Or tell me about her family or growing up in Cloudsdale. Or give me Wonderbolts fic! I really like what we've seen of them so far, and Dash's fangirl squeeing is adorable.
Pinkie Pie: I love Pinkie's tendency to burst into song, because she knows it's that kind of show. I also love that she carries cartoon physics to its logical extreme. Write me a story about her using her reality-warping ways for good, or doing something that is clearly impossible because she's Pinkie Pie and she doesn't entirely believe in impossible. Did she really grow up on a rock farm? Is there a method to her madness? Probably not, but I want to know anyway.
Princess Cadance: I actually really like Cadance/Shining Armor, so if you wanted to write fic about them getting together, that would be amazingly cute. If you'd rather write fic about Cadance on her own, tell me about one time her magic backfired, or write me a fic about what it was like growing up a princess. (Or... did she somehow become an alicorn? Twilight earned her wings via magic + understanding of friendship, but maybe Cadance did it some other way? I'm not devoted to either headcanon.)
Shining Armor: Again, I would like a sweet Cadance/Shining Armor fic. I'd also love to see scenes from his and Twilight's childhood, or how he came into his magic and joined the guard.
This fandom is so happy and cheerful and fun and funny! And I love it. I am in awe of how they managed to make it totally delightful and watchable for people outside the target audience. Honestly, I don't really have any deep thoughts about ponies. For me, this is a cartoon I come home to when I have had a bad day. I really love the cartoony humor, the relationships between the characters, and the fact that there is always a happy ending.
I don't strongly ship anything but Cadance/Shining Armor in this fandom. I do ship Rainbow Dash/Fluttershy a little teensy bit if you see them that way, but gen friendship fic for them would be equally wonderful and awesome.
And while I don't object to ships in this fandom, please do not write me cartoon pony sex or grim gritty dark fic.
